The Chevrolet Blazer holds a special place in American automotive history. Part off roader, part family hauler and part weekend adventure machine, the Blazer helped define the modern SUV. From its early K5 roots to the later GMT400 (OBS) versions, each generation carried forward Chevy’s blend of durability, capability and everyday practicality. Today, these rigs have become some of the most sought after classics in the truck and SUV restoration world.

Generations of the Blazer

K5 Blazer 1969 to 1991

Launched as a response to the Ford Bronco and International Scout, the original K5 Blazer delivered something many competitors couldn’t - full-size capability packaged with Chevy truck toughness. Based on GM’s C/K-10 pickup chassis, early K5s offered both four-wheel drive (1969-1991) and two-wheel drive (1970-1982) configurations, removable hard tops, a spacious cabin and a full lineup of 6 cylinder and small block V8 engines. Their body on frame construction and straightforward mechanical layout make them ideal for restoration today.

In 1973, the second generation K5 debuted with GM’s new Squarebody styling, introducing a stronger chassis, improved ride quality and a more modern interior. These models became icons in their own right, appearing in magazines, off road events and even movie backdrops. The Squarebody era lasted nearly two decades, cementing the K5 as one of the longest running and most recognizable SUVs in history.

GMT400 (OBS) Blazer 1992 to 1994

Both the K5 and GMT400 series are now experiencing a major resurgence, as collectors and off-road builders turn to classic SUVs for their next projects.

Performance and Utility Legacy

chevrolet-1993-blazer-gmt400For 1992, General Motors redesigned its entire full-size SUV lineup, based on the GMT400 (OBS) pickup introduced in 1988. These full-size Blazers no longer featured a lift-off, hard top roof. The full-size Blazer name was replaced in 1995, and the Chevrolet Tahoe carried on as a 2-door model through 1999 with few changes.

Whether 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive, the Blazer built its reputation on versatility. K5 buyers enjoyed powerful truck derived drivetrains capable of tackling trails, towing toys or cruising the highway. Optional off-road equipment, including full-time 4-wheel drive, skid plates and heavy-duty suspension, turned the Blazer into a true adventure vehicle.

The GMT 400 (OBS) brought a new level of refinement, offering independent front suspension in 4-wheel drive models.

Today, both K5 and GMT400 (OBS) Blazers are prized for exactly those reasons. Reliability, ruggedness and a massive aftermarket that makes restoration easier and more customizable than ever.

American Classic

chevrolet-1977-k5-blazerThe Chevrolet Blazer is a cornerstone of SUV history, one that helped shape everything that came after. From topless first generation K5s cruising down the beach, to lifted Squarebodies dominating mountain trails, to clean GMT400s preserved as beloved daily drivers, the Blazer spans generations of enthusiasts. With millions produced and countless surviving examples, the Blazer continues to inspire builders, off-road fans and classic truck collectors. Whether you're returning a K5 to factory condition or upgrading your GMT400 (OBS) with modern performance parts, OPGI is proud to support every step of your restoration journey.
