SMI offers two stages of rebuilding for the computer-controlled electronic Q-jet carburetor. The Stage I version is remanufactured for totally stock vehicles with the carb being stripped down and completely rebuilt with brushed throttle shafts, epoxied well plugs, new throttle position sensor, new mixture control solenoid, new electric choke and a new choke pull-off. The Stage II version features all the above, but is calibrated and reworked for a mildly modified engine using a computer-controlled carburetor. The only modifications allowed to the engine are as follows: emissions-legal dual plane intake manifold, no more than 9.5:1 compression, a cam with no more than 212° duration @ 0.050" valve lift, mild head porting and emissions-legal headers. Purchasing an SMI precision remanufactured computer-controlled electronic Q-jet carburetor is the only way to go as factory replacement carbs have been discontinued and when they are to be found, they're expensive.
